The Belogradchik Rocks are a phenomenon about 30 km long, 3-5 km wide and up to 200 m high, situated near the town of Belogradchik, on the north-west part of the country . |
They are a whimsical open-air museum, which beauty comes from the red-coloured sandstone. Throughout the centuries the nature has sculptured strange rocky giants, fantastic figures, obelisks and towers - a whole assembly, which amazingly gathers in a whole plot of stories. Many of the rocks have their own names: The Rider, The Madonna, The Schoolgirl, Adam and Eve, The Twins, etc., since different stories are associated with them.
The flora around the rocks includes many species that can be found just on Balkans. The fauna is represented by owl, imperial eagle, black stork, wolf, wild boar, deer and many more.
The rocks started to gain shape about 230 million years ago, as in this sandstone and limestone more than 100 caves appeared. These rocky columns form a natural fortress, which defense functionality has been used since ancient times.
